WELCOME TO CATHEDRAL CITY
Cathedral City is family, it´s business, it´s progressive . . . Cathedral City is the "Spirit of the Desert."
Strategically located, with borders on both sides of Interstate 10, Cathedral City is a haven for expanding and relocating businesses. Incorporated in 1981, Cathedral City is the third largest in population in the Coachella Valley with 53,402 residents.
History of Cathedral City
The Cahuilla Indians were the original inhabitants of Cathedral City. They lived throughout the Coachella Valley for more than 2,000 years. In 1876, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians established their reservation which encompasses approximately 28% of Cathedral City.
In 1850, Col. Henry Washington of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered that the area's canyons resembled the interior of a grand cathedral. Recording history, he named this canyon of majestic architecture Cathedral Canyon. Four early developers later had the same impression and in 1925, they developed the area's first subdivision and named it CATHEDRAL CITY, CALIFORNIA.
Cathedral City Today
Today, Cathedral City is dedicated to providing a quality lifestyle and business climate for those already present and those in the future. Not only is it a destination of friendly neighborhoods, lush country clubs, diverse shopping and unlimited business potential, but the City issues more business licenses each year than any other city in the Coachella Valley. The city reflects a unique balance among small-town atmosphere; big-city conveniences and desert resort living.
Cathedral City is part of the Palm Springs Unified School District and has 5 elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. The City is also close to the College of the Desert, University of California Riverside, and University of California San Bernardino. Eisenhower Medical Center and Desert Regional Medical Center offer nearby excellent health facilities. Cathedral City is the hub of family entertainment with concerts and events in Town Square, the IMAX and Mary Pickford Theaters, Boomers, Big League Dreams Sports Park, golf, tennis, restaurants, nightlife, dinner theaters, and incredible hiking in the nearby mountains.
Cathedral City's Fountain of Life
The City´s public art is some of the most appealing in the region. The beautiful Cathedral City Town Square features a uniquely designed, award-winning stone sculpture, the Fountain of Life, as well as bronze statues of film star, George Montgomery, and musician Buddy Rogers. The Fountain of Life was designed by artist Jennifer Johnson in coordination with architect Reuel Young, A.I.A. It was built by House of Stone and Fountains and Landscape Enhancements. Also, Artisans whose families have sculpted stone for more than 600 years carved the fountain pieces out of Adoquin stone from a quarry near Guadalajara, Mexico. Once the individual pieces arrived in the desert, Johnson spent more than a year adorning the fountain with hand cut mosaic tiles and glass. The overriding theme found in the fountain's design is the spiral, a symbol of continuous birth and ever-upward rejuvenation - a theme that Cathedral City takes to heart with its residents and growth.
